As per IMD forecast, Delhi is expected to witness cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and thundershowers
Delhi was hit by heavy rainfall on Wednesday, with more than 100 mm of rain falling in an hour. Even a day after heavy rains sparked chaos, some areas of the city remained under water. According to the meteorological agency, the rainy weather may continue until August 5.
According to the IMD forecast, Delhi is expected to witness cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and thundershowers.
In view of the weather conditions, the meteorological agency also expects slight chaos in road traffic in the capital and an increased risk of vehicle accidents. The weather department also said flooding in low-lying areas and roads is also possible.
Severe impact of Wednesday's rain
Heavy downpours on Wednesday night killed six people and injured three others in the capital, including two children. These deaths were caused by electrocution, waterlogging and building collapse.
The Delhi government on Thursday directed all schools in the city to remain closed in view of heavy rainfall. Several areas including Ruchendri, Kashmir Gate and Rajinder Nagar were also inundated due to rains.
Videos from south Delhi's Qutub Minar area showed vehicles plying on water-logged roads and traffic police personnel working to manage traffic flow.
IMD Resident Consultation
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to stay indoors, protect doors and windows and avoid unnecessary travel.
“It is recommended to seek safe shelter and avoid tree cover to mitigate risk. Please stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
Weather conditions in the northern states
Many heavy rain events occurred in Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rainfall washed away many houses, bridges and roads, leaving 5 people dead and about 50 missing.
The National Emergency Operations Center said heavy rains occurred in Nirmand, Seniji and Malana districts of Kullu, Padar in Mandi and Rampur in Shimla district.
The local weather office has issued a “red alert” predicting heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in three districts: Kangra, Kullu and Mandi on Thursday.
Heavy rainfall was reported in Samej Khad area of Rampur district in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. After the disaster, NDRF personnel and district administration personnel rushed to the spot and conducted rescue operations.
Information released by the Meteorological Department also stated that light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand this week, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Principal Secretary Omkar Sharma said on Thursday: “Last night, the IMD issued a 36-hour alert and heavy rains started falling in about seven to eight districts of Himachal Pradesh from midnight. First report of heavy rain From Kullu district, several houses and six shops were washed away, bridges were damaged and seven people were missing. The second heavy rain was reported from Mandi district, where one body was found and nine people were missing. Four houses were washed away…rescue operations are underway.
