A court here sentenced a man to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping an 80-year-old bedridden woman in 2022, calling the incident a “blow to social and moral values”.
Noting the victim's testimony that she begged the 30-year-old prisoner to let her go with clasped hands, the court held that the perpetrator's actions were solely to satisfy his sexual desires.
Judge Anchal of Tis Hazari District Court is hearing the case of Ankit Mowgli, who was found guilty of criminal offenses including rape, housebreaking, theft and voluntary hurt.
According to prosecutors, Ankit entered the home of the victim, who was bedridden due to the inability to move his lower limbs. He then allegedly beat her, raped her multiple times and escaped after stealing her phone.
“In her detailed testimony, the victim said that even though she had been crossing her hands in front of the offender, he raped her by rotating her legs from the bed to the wall at a 90-degree angle, just after the incident. , when she was undergoing a medical examination, she was raped.
“Of course, rape is one of the most heinous crimes, which debases and stains the soul of the victim. It shatters the character and self-confidence of the victim, but the crime here also strikes at social and moral values.
The court said there was no evidence that the crime was committed in the heat of the moment or under any compulsion. On the contrary, the facts of the case show that the offender committed the crime “solely to satisfy his own sexual desires and to use the victim as a means”. Taking into account factors such as mitigation, aggravating factors, the offender's age, family responsibilities, and prospects for rehabilitation, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for rape.
The court also sentenced him to five years in prison for trespassing, one year for theft, and six months for intentional injury.
The sentences will be executed concurrently, the statement said.
The court also referred the case to the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DSLA) to determine appropriate compensation to the victim.
