Baltimore thunderstorm downed trees, blocked 184 roads

Severe thunderstorms hit the Baltimore area on Saturday night, uprooting trees and blocking 184 roads across the city, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott wrote on social media platform X at 7:35 p.m.

“We are actively monitoring the storm and will be ready to deploy teams to clear roads once lightning clears the area,” he wrote. “Please stay off roadways if possible and report downed trees and traffic signal outages to 311.”

Posts on social media by WMAR and WBAL reporters showed roads in Hampden, Roland Park and other north Baltimore neighborhoods completely blocked by large trees and debris. The storm prompted the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Arts to cancel Saturday's headline show by percussionist and drummer Sheila E. at Artscape, after another storm on Friday caused Chaka Khan to cancel that day's headline show.

The storm caused outages to 43,801 BGE customers in central Maryland, the company said in an email just after 9 p.m. Crews had restored power to about 7,000 customers as of 9 p.m.

“Extensive storm damage includes tree debris, downed trees and power lines,” the email said. “BGE crews and contractors are working to restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible.”

Showers and thunderstorms are still possible the remainder of Saturday night, mainly before 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storm is expected to return before 8 a.m. Sunday, with mostly clear weather expected after 11 p.m. Sunday with temperatures around 70 degrees and calm winds.
