As the water level rises in Godavari due to the water release, flood-like conditions are likely to occur in the downstream villages of Saikheda and Chandroi.
The Nashik district administration in Maharashtra has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant as water levels in the Godavari river rose due to heavy rains, officials said on Sunday.
An official said the authorities released 4,000 cusecs of water from the Gangapur dam, which supplies water to Nashik city, at 4 pm due to persistent rainfall in the area.
The official said a flood-like situation was likely to occur in Sekheda and Chandroi villages downstream of Nipada taluka in the district as the water level in Godavari rose due to water release.
The authorities urged citizens living in these areas and along the Godavari coast to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, the official said.
Small temples at Ramkund and Nashik Goda Ghat were inundated on Sunday. By afternoon, water had reached the waist of the iconic Dutondya Maruti statue.
Nashik district has received 476.1 mm of rainfall so far since June. Officials said the total water storage capacity of reservoirs in the region is 28.748 billion cubic feet, accounting for 43.78% of the total capacity.
They said despite heavy rains, out of the 24 dams in the region, Tisgaon, Nagasakya and Manikpun reservoirs were running out of water.
