Akhil Giri, the MLA from Ramnagar where the district is located, came under fire from locals when he was seen threatening ranger Manisha Sahu in a video of containment.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday demanded the resignation of West Bengal Prisons Minister Akhil Giri and apologized to a woman officer of the state forest department after video footage showed him threatening and abusing her, sparking controversy.
Speaking to reporters in Kanti in Purba's Medinipur district, Giri said he would resign but would not apologize.
Giri, the MLA from Ramnagar where the district is located, was seen in the video threatening forest ranger Manisha Sahu and warning her after she and her team cleared forest department land near Tajpur He was swarmed by locals when his term was reduced due to encroachment.
TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen said, “Following the party's instructions, state president Subrata Bakshi called Akhil Giri on Sunday afternoon and directed him to Apologize to the female officer and submit her resignation immediately.
Geary said there was “no question of apologising” to any official, but he regretted the comments he made in an emotional state on Saturday. “I will send my resignation via email tonight and hand it over personally to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Assembly tomorrow,” he added.
Additional TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar stressed that the party would not tolerate such behavior by its members and admitted that Giri's outburst had damaged the party's image to an extent.
Incidentally, two years ago in 2022, Giri was severely criticized for his controversial remarks against President Drupadi Murmu. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had to apologize for Giri's “derogatory remarks” after the opposition created an uproar.
