There will be no movement on troop convoys in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, in view of the recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
A senior government official said the movement was severely restricted amid reports of plans to attack the convoy. Sources also said there will be no action on the Amarnath Yatra convoy as well. The troops have been put on high alert and all senior officials have been asked to personally monitor the security situation.
Article 370 was abrogated on August 5, 2019, and the status of J&K was changed to a Union Territory.
A senior official aware of the development mentioned that the Jammu region posed a major threat and troops, especially the Army, have been directed to avoid isolated operations in the region.
Additional troops have been mobilized to the Jammu region where the Assam Rifles (AR) will be stationed for the first time. Previously, AR only focused on the Northeast region. Likewise, border security has been beefed up to monitor infiltrations or suspicious activities.
After the abrogation of Article 370, things changed in J&K and the tourism industry experienced unprecedented growth. The center claims that since the relocation, UT has entered an era of peace, progress and prosperity. Schools, colleges, universities, hospitals and other public institutions have been functioning effectively without strikes or riots as the earlier practice of daily khatars, strikes, stone pelting and bandhing are now a thing of the past.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir participated in the recently held Lok Sabha elections with record voting enthusiasm. Owing to improved law and order, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 2.11 billion tourist arrivals in 2023. This harmonious law and order situation enabled the government to Initiate and implement socio-economic development,” the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a parliamentary reply.
