Jahangir Alam, a servant at Sheikh Hasina's residence, reportedly owns assets worth Rs 284 crore and currently lives in the United States.
Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as prime minister and leave the country amid escalating protests in Bangladesh and threats to her security. Discussions about Hasina's tenure and personal wealth have intensified globally following the recent turmoil. It is worth noting that Hasina, who has been in power since 2009, holds the record as the longest-serving prime minister of Bangladesh.
Recent reports suggest that Jahangir Alam, a servant employed at Hasina's residence, reportedly has assets worth Rs 284 crore and is currently living in the United States. The revelation prompted Hasina to order an investigation into Alam's finances. The huge discrepancy between Alam's reported wealth and Hasina's net worth has raised questions about her own finances.
During the 2024 Bangladesh general election, Hasina disclosed her assets to the Election Commission. According to the affidavit, her total assets are approximately Rs 314 crore (BDT 436 crore). Hasina's income comes mainly from agriculture, including six acres of farmland and fish farming. In addition, she also owns a car that was given to her. During her tenure, Hasina's annual salary was Rs 9,92,922.
The daughter of Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina's long tenure and financial details continue to draw scrutiny amid the current political crisis.
