The Allahabad High Court recently denied bail to a man accused of impersonation and cheating in the UP Police recruitment process this year.

Amit Kumar, who has been detained since February 17, 2024, allegedly appeared for the UP Police Recruitment Board examination on behalf of original candidate Sachin Yadav. The exam, held at PRT Saraswati Inter College in Shikohabad, was compromised due to Kumar using fake admit card and Aadhaar card. The biometric system failed to match Kumar's details, leading to his immediate arrest by school authorities and subsequent handover to the police.

His lawyer, Alok Ashish Vaibhava, argued that Kumar had been wrongly implicated and stressed that he had no previous criminal record. The lawyer stressed that Kumar had already spent several agonizing months in jail and assured the court that he would not abuse his freedom on bail and would fully cooperate with the trial proceedings.

State lawyers strongly opposed the bail application, emphasizing the seriousness of the offence. The state's lawyer stressed that Kumar was caught red-handed while trying to fraudulently obtain a position in the Uttar Pradesh Police, a position that requires utmost integrity and honesty.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal noted the seriousness of the charges. The judge highlighted the serious impact of examination fraud on the principles of meritocracy and social fairness.

“Cheating in government exams undermines the principles of meritocracy and equal opportunity that are vital to promoting social mobility and ensuring social fairness,” he said.

He stressed that allowing individuals involved in such misconduct to escape justice could exacerbate inequality and damage the fabric of society.

He emphasized, “Therefore, cheating in exams must be severely combated because its impact is not limited to individuals, but affects the entire society.”
