The tenure of National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma ended on Tuesday.
“Today is the last day of my nine-year term as the President of the National Commission for Women (NCW). These nine years have been a roller coaster ride for me. From humble beginnings to completing three semesters at NCW, I have come a long way. road,” she said.
“This journey is too rich and deep to describe in a page or two; it would take several books to truly do it. I have received a lot of love along the way and learned how to handle criticism, which is It's an inevitable part of any job of this magnitude. Social media, while liberating, can also be unforgiving at times, and people make judgments without really getting to know you or your work. I hope they do. Taking the time to better understand my efforts and intentions,” she added.
She hoped that the Women's Commission would continue to flourish and make greater progress under the new leadership.
“As I step down from this role, I take with me cherished memories and a deep sense of accomplishment. I am confident that NCW will continue to thrive and make greater progress under new leadership.
According to PTI, Sharma has been a member of the Women's Commission since August 2015 and concurrently chairperson since September 29, 2017, and became the chairperson of the commission in 2018.
Sharma has been a strong advocate for gender sensitization among police personnel as they are the first point of contact for victims.
She has been subject to many controversies during her tenure, the latest being the alleged inaction in Manipur. She is also often criticized for not taking action in states not ruled by the BJP, a charge she has vehemently denied.
