Two shelters in South Carolina are “overwhelmed and grateful” after the community stepped up to provide temporary homes for animals during Tropical Storm Debbie.

“All 137 animals in our care are now in safe, loving foster homes,” the Berkeley Animal Center announced on Facebook.

On Sunday, the shelter put out an emergency call for foster care so the animals could weather the storm in their homes.

By 12:30 p.m., all cats and kittens had found homes, and by 6:18 p.m., the shelter was declared cleared.

“Our call for help was answered and we will forever be grateful to you. Your dedication to helping us will never be forgotten. Please give our children all the love while making sure they stay safe during the storm. Staff wrote.

Dorchester Paws of Dorchester County added that they are “shocked, grateful, delighted, humbled and proud of the way our community helps animals in need.”

The shelter said there were no dogs or cats on campus as of Sunday.

“We are so grateful to those of you who opened your homes to Storm Foster, keeping innocent animals safe as floodwaters rose, and providing a warm and loving place to land for a few days,” the shelter said.
