Anand Varadarajan took over his father's farm and farmed it using new technology.
Tomatoes are an important vegetable in Indian cuisine and are used to impart a rich flavor to dishes. The cost of vegetables continues to rise for a number of reasons. So, to combat the situation, a farmer in Tamil Nadu adopted a unique farming method to grow tomatoes.
According to information obtained by Local18, the man’s name is Anand Varadarajan. He uses greenhouse cultivation methods to grow tomatoes. He chose this approach to respond to the climate change situation.
Anand is a resident of Ayakudy in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. According to Local18, he worked for an enterprise company. Now he has inherited his father's farm and is farming it using new technology.
He grows vegetables in an independent farm in Ayakudi, dedicated to multi-house farming. It provides sun protection to tomatoes, preventing them from being damaged and helping them grow better. More information shows that he grows tomatoes under 200-micron-thick UV protection imported from Israel. In addition, to irrigate crops, he uses drip irrigation to collect rainwater.
Speaking to Local18, he said: “We are growing tomatoes on 2,500 square meters of land. The average yield is 10 tons of tomatoes. According to him, the cost is about 900,000 to 10 lakhs and the investment can be recovered in two years.” He further added “Farming is organic. Agriculture will suffer the most from climate change. We are collecting data to find out what the problem is.” He said they are predicting the types of crops that can be grown in the next few years and hope to get good yields .
Local18 shared a video capturing the vast tomato growing area. Viewers can see ripe red tomatoes as well as unripe green tomatoes.
