On March 14, 2007, 14 people were killed in an alleged police shooting.
Similar to the Singur Nano factory, the World Bank government also wants to set up a special economic zone in Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district.
Former Bengal Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattacharjee passed away on Thursday morning, August 8, at his residence in Palm Avenue, South Kolkata. He is 80 years old. Locals of Nandigram are mourning the death of the late chief minister. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee envisioned providing employment opportunities to the people of Nandigranm and transforming their lives.
In 2007, there was a huge political upheaval in Bengal. Under the Land Acquisition Act of 1894, the West Bengal government acquired land in Singur, providing the Tata Group with nearly 1,000 acres of land for the Tata Nano project. Similar to the Singur Nano factory, the WB government also wants to set up a special economic zone at Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district of the state. They want to allocate land to build a 10,000-acre chemical center.
The late chief minister also tried to set up industries on one side of the Haldi river like Haldi Industrial Area and on the other side in Nandigram. Farmers were unwilling to give up agricultural land to establish factories or industries. At that time, a larger movement against the government was launched in the name of the Singur Krishi Zamin Raksha Commission.
On March 14, 2007, Buddhadadeb Bhattacharjee ordered about 2,500 policemen into Nandigram, where police allegedly opened fire, killing 14 people. This resulted in the expulsion of the left-wing party that had ruled West Bengal for 34 years and the failure to achieve the goal of setting up industries. However, now the locals of Nandigram feel that this industry should be set up in Nandigram. It will create many employment opportunities and benefit the East Mednipur district of Nandigram as well as most parts of West Bengal.
Now, many Nandigram locals have moved to other countries for work, including Kuwait, UAE, etc. The structure of the economy will change.
