Doctors across the national capital held candle marches on Saturday to condemn the murder of a female resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
In candle marches organized by various medical colleges and hospitals, doctors held posters and candles demanding a CBI probe into the death of the 32-year-old woman, whose half-naked body was found at a government seminar. Runs a hospital in the capital of West Bengal.
Dr Dhruv Chauhan, a national council member of the Indian Medical Association's Junior Doctors Network, said the incident had raised concerns about the safety of doctors working in hospitals.
“This horrific incident has caused widespread alarm among the medical community across the country. The fear is so intense that doctors now fear they will not be able to perform their duties unless strict safety measures are in place.
“Doctors have been demanding strict implementation of the Central Protection Act and enhanced safety at workplaces. If they cannot ensure safety in their own hospitals and universities, where can they ensure safety? When their own lives are not guaranteed , how to ensure patient safety?
Several resident doctor associations across the city, including those of Hindu Rao Hospital, LNJP Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College and the Indian Medical Association, have demanded a probe into the death of the resident doctor.
“The candle march symbolizes our collective anger and demand for justice. We urge the authorities to take swift and severe action against the perpetrators to ensure a safe environment for all.
“The next course of action will be decided at our upcoming meeting with all stakeholders,” a spokesperson for the Federation of Hospitalist Associations said.
The victim, a second-year student in the hospital's thoracic department, was on duty when she was apparently attacked and killed.
