The association also called for a thorough investigation of “heinous crimes” and severe punishment for the perpetrators

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday issued a statement on the alleged murder and sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, saying that if the safety and security of the “bastion of learning” cannot be ensured, it reflects “the incompetence of the government.”

“The entire Indian medical fraternity is shocked by the brutal murder of Ms. Moumtia Debnath, a second-year PG student at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata,” the IMA said in a statement.

The association also called for a thorough investigation of the “heinous crime” and severe punishment for the perpetrators.

“If the safety and security of the learning citadel cannot be ensured, it only shows the incompetence of the government. The entire medical fraternity in India stands with the family of the deceased and her colleagues.

The IMA further stated that this crime reflects the anarchy and insecurity prevailing on campus.

The semi-naked body of the 31-year-old postgraduate student was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. The victim, a second-year student in the thoracic department, was on duty the night before. Her body showed signs of injury and preliminary autopsy reports suggested she had been sexually abused before she was killed.

Massive protests erupted over the killing of the intern. Junior doctors in various hospitals across West Bengal staged sit-ins and marches demanding severe punishment for those involved. Protests were held at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, National Medical College and Hospital and Medical College.

There were also reports of scuffles between police and protesting doctors outside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
