A number of pet attacks have made headlines in recent days. The incidents have sparked concern among residents and authorities. In the same situation, a shocking incident also occurred in which a woman died after being bitten by a domestic cat. The incident took place in Shivamogga, Karnataka. The deceased has been identified as Gangibai, a 50-year-old woman from Tarlaghatta village in Shikaripur taluk of Shivamogga district. Doctors said the woman died of rabies after being bitten by a cat. Two months ago, the woman's leg was bitten by a pet cat. A cat first attacked a young man at a campsite in Tallagata before biting the woman. The woman had to have several vaccinations as a result of the bite. She then recovered after receiving a shot. Therefore, she received no other injections. The woman's life was taken due to negligence in not receiving the injection.
Rabies can also be transmitted if the saliva of an infected animal comes into contact with the mucous membranes of other animals or humans. Most human rabies cases are caused by dog bites. In this case, the woman died from cat-borne rabies.
Last year, a government teacher and his 24-year-old son died within a week of allegedly contracting rabies. Two people were bitten and scratched by pet cats in Uttar Pradesh's Akbarpur town. Officials said the cat was bitten by a stray dog.
According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report, cat bites account for 2-50% of animal bite-related injuries worldwide, second only to dog bites. “Cat bites are associated with rabies virus infection and several bacterial infections related to Bartonella, Brucella, Leptospira and Campylobacter,” the report said. “The likelihood of infection in a cat bite is from a dog bite double.
