A vigilante volunteer arrested for raping and murdering intern doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata
Kolkata police have identified and arrested a suspect in the sexual assault and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital due to a broken Bluetooth headset.
The accused, named Sanjay Roy, was an outsider who had easy access to different departments of the hospital as he was a citizen volunteer. “We have arrested a person who is an outsider. His activities are very suspicious and he seems to be directly involved in the crime,” the police officer told PTI.
Bluetooth captured by CCTV
sources revealed news18 The defendant's headphones were a key clue that led to his arrest. Sources revealed that CCTV footage showed Roy wearing Bluetooth headphones when he entered the hospital, but they were missing when he left. Police found the broken part of the headset and linked it to the suspect to help them solve the case.
Talking about the arrested accused, police said they found a broken part of the Bluetooth headset, which led to the appearance of the criminal. A source in the police station said other PGTs and female doctors also identified the culprits from CCTV footage captured from elsewhere in the hospital.
On Friday, the half-naked body of a female PGT doctor, a second-year student in the thoracic department, was found in the seminar hall of the hospital. She was on duty Thursday night and had bruises on her body.
The preliminary autopsy report showed that the female doctor had been sexually abused before she was killed. Her father claims she was raped and murdered inside the hospital and is working to cover up the truth. Police are also questioning two trainee doctors in connection with the ongoing investigation. They are trying to determine if Roy had accomplices or if he acted alone.
The arrest of Roy, a citizen volunteer with alleged access to the powerful Police Welfare Board, has raised questions about security measures and oversight within the hospital. “Now, we are trying to find out who else was with him or who else was around him,” a police officer said, adding that police may conduct necessary medical examinations on him.
