Protests by junior doctors continued for a fourth day on Monday, demanding swift punishment for those responsible.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday urged the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal to take strict action to ensure that RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata and Justice has been sought in the case of a female hospital doctor accused of rape and murder.
The body of a female graduate student who was allegedly raped and murdered in a hospital seminar hall was found on Friday morning. A citizen volunteer was arrested on Saturday.
Protests by junior doctors demanding swift punishment for those responsible for the crime continued for a fourth day on Monday, affecting services at government hospitals across West Bengal.
“The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata is heartbreaking,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a Hindi post on Women's safety is a major issue in the country and requires concrete efforts.
Priyanka Gandhi said: “I call on the state government to take immediate and stringent action in this case to ensure justice for the victim's family and fellow doctors.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday her government would hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if police failed to solve the case by Sunday.
Banerjee also said she hoped the case would be heard in a fast-track court.
