A year and a half ago, a climate street-blocking couple gained notoriety for blocking a federal highway near Stuttgart “for the climate” and then headed to Thailand (and Bali?) for a few months, skipping their court proceedings.
When online media such as Bild made this double standard public, the perpetrator, Yannick S., wrote a letter to the Berlin newspaper “taz” in which he made hilariously provocative remarks . When it was revealed that Yannick S. had dropped out of engineering school and was involved in the construction of internal combustion engines, it became clear that the blocker and his partner did not care at all about “climate”.
The couple may simply be using trendy topics to pursue personal interests. This may have been an assumption of stardom that later led to a well-paying, low-effort job in an NGO (“the work was done by others,” Helmut Schelsky 1974). Or maybe it's some kind of enjoyment in the suffering of working people.
Nothing seems to embarrass Yannick S., which is why he glued himself to the tarmac at Frankfurt Airport after returning from a high-society vacation under palm trees.
Cheerful thought: What if there were a lot of left-wing Green voters and other climate activists on the long-haul flights he grounded? After all, it's summer vacation season, and the lawyer's daughter and the doctor's son don't want to be stuck sweating on the tarmac. Instead, they would rather enjoy their prosperity under the palm trees.
At least there is a glimmer of hope: Yannick S. has now been fined more than 100,000 euros for frequent adhesions, which he cannot afford to pay. Without assistance from NGOs or fundraising campaigns, criminals who stand in the way of climate change could end up in jail. How many years does this equal?
