The Modi-led government is undergoing a major reshuffle of top secretaries and directors-general, leading to a complete refresh of the bureaucracy. Starting next month, new officials will take up senior positions and serve as the brains of the government. But for this, the government will have to fill various secretary and director general posts.
With the appointment of a new cabinet secretary, the post of finance minister will become vacant and a new official will be needed to oversee the finance ministry. Current finance minister TV Somanathan will become cabinet secretary next month. The Cabinet Secretary is the highest-ranking official in government who works closely with the Prime Minister.
Likewise, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which reports directly to the PMO, has also been functioning without a secretary. Current Union Home Minister Ajay Bhalla also has the additional responsibility of DoPT.
Apart from these changes, along with the appointment of a new Home Secretary, the government will also need to appoint a new Culture Secretary as the current Culture Secretary Govind Mohan will be the Home Secretary. Additionally, Health Minister Apurva Chandra will retire next month, necessitating the appointment of a successor.
Apart from these three secretary-level transfers, the government will also have to appoint a number of director generals of the force. Currently, forces like CISF and BSF are functioning without a permanent Commander-in-Chief and the additional costs are borne by CRPF DG Anish Dayal of CISF and DG SSB Daljit Chowdhary of BSF.
The government also needs to find a new director general for the NSG after the recent order shortening the tenure of NSG director general Nalin Prabhat and transferring him to the AGMUT cadre. “Shortening the tenure of Nalin Prabhat, Director General, National Security Guard (NSG), IPS (AP:92). Nalin Prabhat, inter-cadre representative of IPS (AP:92) from Andhra Pradesh to AGMUT cadre, initially for a period of three years from the date of joining the AGMUT cadre or until further orders (whichever is earlier) to relax restrictions on mutual cadre representation,”
Prabhat is expected to be the new DGP of J&K as the current DGP of J&K will retire next month.
Interestingly, IB Director Tapan Deka (1988) is a senior person compared to the incoming Home Secretary Govind Mohan (1989).
