Amid national outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female PG trainee doctor in Kolkata, Uttarakhand police on Wednesday arrested a suspect in the rape and murder of a missing 33-year-old nurse on July 30. Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar District.
The deceased was a resident of Islamnagar in Gadarpur and worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Nainital. She lives in Bilaspur Colony with her 11-year-old daughter.
The victim's sister filed a missing report with the Rudrapur police station on July 31, following which the police started investigating the case. More than a week later, her body was found in an open field in Dib Dibba district of Uttar Pradesh. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Accused raped, killed, robbed nurse
The accused was arrested from Jodhpur in Rajasthan and is a laborer from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, the accused Dharmendra took the nurse to the bushes, raped her first, then strangled her to death and snatched her jewelery before running away.
How did the police catch the defendant?
Police have searched CCTV camera footage showing the victim's last known whereabouts from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur. Police traced the location of the victim's stolen phone and eventually found Dharmendra.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he attacked the nurse at Basundara Apartments on Kashpur Road with the intention of robbing her. He then took her to a clearing, raped her and strangled her to death. After killing her, the accused fled with the money and jewelery in her purse.
