Amid accusations of dodgy dealing and fraud at the hospital, the agency is racing to piece together the series of events that led to the brutal killings
The noose seemed to be tightening around Sandip Ghosh, the former director of Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, after he was detained for questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday afternoon. Ghosh resigned from RG Kar on August 12 after a 31-year-old doctor was found raped and murdered.
Ghosh was arrested by the CBI after the Calcutta High Court recommended his presence in court. His interrogation at the CBI CGO General Office in Salt Lake City lasted more than eight hours. His former colleagues – head of the thoracic department Arunava Dutta Chowdhury and former dean of RH Kar Dr Sanjay Vashisth – were also questioned by the CBI team. The agency has questioned around 30 people so far, including doctors, PG students, HoDs and staff. Security, ward boys and nurses were summoned on Friday evening.
Sources told CNN-News18 that the CBI is questioning the hospital management and staff to piece together the sequence of events that led to the doctor's brutal murder. Asked whether RG Kar's allegations of shady dealings were also being probed, a CBI official said: “We are probing all aspects of the case.”
Family members of the deceased told CBI that the victim was under stress at RG Kar. The CBI now wants Ghosh to answer whether he knew why the victim was stressed and whether any complaints were made to the university authorities about the stress she was facing.
Safety of doctors and patients, use of the seminar hall where the crime took place and overall management of the hospital are among the issues the CBI team is seeking answers to.
Sanjay Roy, a 31-year-old citizen volunteer, was arrested by the police on suspicion of raping and killing the victim, but her family and colleagues are not satisfied with the police investigation. The CBI is awaiting forensic and DNA reports to ascertain whether more than one person was involved in the heinous crime.
