Protesting students said the rape and murder of a doctor in the workplace was a matter of great concern.
Hundreds of students held a march here on Friday to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital.
Holding placards and shouting slogans against the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, students marched on the streets demanding justice for the victims.
Protesting students said the rape and murder of a doctor in the workplace was a matter of great concern.
Ashkar, a student who participated in the march, said justice should be delivered to the victims and their families as soon as possible. “Even after 78 years of independence, women are still not safe in this country… How can this country be safe if half the population is not safe?” she said.
Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad principal Ravindra Puri, who also teaches at SMJN PG College, participated in the march and said people across the country were angry over the incident.
“Even though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a woman herself, women in West Bengal are not safe,” he said.
Asserting that Hindu women are constantly being oppressed by the West Bengal government, Puri demanded the Center to dissolve the government immediately, saying: “In this situation, Mamata Banerjee has no right to remain in power even for a minute.”
