Reuters reported that the Ukrainian government on Tuesday approved a plan to vigorously stimulate the development of green energy as the war with Russia continues to drag on.
According to Reuters, Ukrainian officials said the development strategy will require about $20 billion in investment to achieve, with the goal of increasing the country's share of energy sources such as solar and wind to 27% by 2030. Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been hit hard by the ongoing war, and the U.S. government has approved at least $175 billion in aid to Ukraine since Russian troops entered Ukrainian territory, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. Specifically, according to Reuters, the Ukrainian government aims to have green energy power generation provide 33% of the electricity needed for heating and cooling systems, 29% of the electricity needed for overall power generation, and 17% of the electricity consumed by transportation. Although the government has not revealed what proportion of electricity demand can currently be met by green energy generation, some local media have reported the figure to be around 10%.
The war in Ukraine continues nearly two and a half years after it began. Ukrainian forces have broken into Russia's Kursk region and taken control of Russian territory in recent weeks, a sign that the fighting may not end soon.
The manpower situation on the Ukrainian side has also become a growing problem, with tens of thousands of soldiers killed in the war so far. The Ukrainian military has begun sending thousands of prisoners to the front lines to take up arms in an effort to cope with the numbers problem.
Reuters reported that Russian troops damaged or disabled about half of Ukraine's energy production infrastructure through drone strikes and air strikes during the war. The country has been forced to rely on solar, wind and nuclear power, raising security concerns given the risk of a nuclear accident from the fighting.
