The CBI is also scanning the phone records of former RG Kar principal Dr Sandip Ghosh to ascertain whether the trainee doctor's death was initially termed a 'suicide' on his instructions
The CBI on Sunday continued for the third day in a row questioning former principal Dr Sandeep Ghosh in connection with the alleged rape and murder of postgraduate doctor RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Officials said his phone records were being scanned to determine whether the trainee's death was first called a “suicide” following his instructions.
“The CBI did not arrest me… I was not forced to sit face to face with Sanjay Roy (the main accused who has been arrested in the case),” said the desperate man, who was seen almost pleading with the media. “Don't spread rumors about me,” he said as he rushed to the CBI office in the CGO Building in Salt Lake City in the pouring rain.
Until recently, he was considered the “most powerful” person at RG Kar Hospital, but now it is clear that the noose is tightening around him. Officials are questioning a trainee doctor's conduct in hospital management after his body was found.
The woman's family expressed concerns that she was being “silenced” on behalf of “someone in a powerful position” and that Roy was simply a scapegoat or acting at the behest of someone.
CBI scans phone records
The CBI is also scanning Dr. Ghosh's phone records. Officials are trying to determine whether the hospital's deputy director acted on his instructions to suggest the death by suicide.
Arunav Chowdhary, chief of the Department of Chest Medicine, reportedly told the CBI that he did not ask the assistant director to call the death a suicide. Sources said the “renovation work” near the crime scene was carried out on the orders of the former principal.
The CBI is now questioning him over these remarks by department heads and senior doctors. The source further said he was asked about the sequence of events on August 9, from the discovery of the body to the first call to the police 40 minutes later.
Officials wanted to know whether Dr Ghosh first received information about the body through a phone call or SMS/WhatsApp message. Any such words or messages could become key evidence in the case.
The CBI has also summoned an assistant sub-inspector of Kolkata police for questioning. Roy once lived in the barracks on the 4th Battalion campus. The victim's driver has also been asked to appear in court to try to find out the motive behind the crime.
