To raise awareness about the need for environmental protection, women in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, tied rakhis to trees and offered them fertilizer instead of sweets.

Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Monday.

The women participating in the event are members of the WhatsApp group “VIP”. The group is led by a committee responsible for planning and coordinating its activities.

Raksha Bandhan symbolizes the sacred bond of brothers and sisters taking care of each other. Committee chairman Neetu Gupta told PTI on Sunday that the idea behind the initiative is to help people connect with the environment and thus motivate them to protect it.

“We decided to have women tie rakhis to trees. Members of our group have been tying rakhis to trees since last Thursday, applying tilak on the trees and watering them after mixing fertilizer in the soil as sweets,” she said.

“In view of the deepening crisis of climate change, we believe that the best way to protect the environment is through large-scale afforestation. To this end, the work is done in mission mode and the target this year is to plant one hundred thousand trees,” she added.

Gupta said women associated with the group have tied Rakhi to about 1,000 trees so far.

Municipal Commissioner Vipin Kumar Mishra praised the initiative and said there was a need to turn it into a mass movement.
