The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a public health emergency.
Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde demanding strict testing and quarantine protocols at Mumbai airport in view of the monkeypox issue.
He said the World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a public health emergency and the virus has now reached Pakistan, urging the government to take proactive measures to prevent its spread in India.
“It has reached close to our homes. We must take action. I have written to the Chief Minister asking for strict testing and quarantine protocols to be implemented at Mumbai airport for all incoming passengers from high-risk countries.
He warned that action must be taken promptly as any delay could have serious consequences.
Earlier in the day, India's health ministry said that no cases of monkeypox have been reported in India, although precautionary measures will be taken to prevent and control the spread of the disease.
The report stated that although it does not rule out the possibility of detecting a small number of imported cases in the coming weeks, the risk of continued large-scale epidemic spread in India is currently low.
