Net Zero Watch warns electricity bills have been rising for years

Net Zero Watch has warned Labour's electricity system plans mean consumers will face years of rising power bills. Analysis by the campaign group suggests consumers could be paying an extra £500 a year.

This astonishing growth comes as the government plans to significantly increase renewable energy generation capacity, the cost of which far outweighs the potential savings from reducing fuel use in gas-fired power plants.

Net Zero Watch warns that the government's plans to deploy large-scale floating offshore wind power will make the situation worse.

Net Zero Watch director Andrew Mountford said:

Floating offshore wind is likely to be the most expensive form of electricity deployed commercially in the UK, and all signs point to it remaining so.

    Mr Montford said:

“Mr Miliband's plans are unsustainable and will never be realized in practice. The only question is how much damage Mr Starmer will do to the country before he is forced to change Secretary of State.

    Notes to editors

    • The analysis is contained in a recent article published by the Net Zero Watch website.
    • The average cost of floating offshore wind power is well over £200/MWh. In the current renewables auction, new capacity developers are quoting £240.
    • The impact on consumers is partly reflected in increased electricity bills and partly reflected in increased cost of living.
