The gates of the Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka were washed away, triggering debate over a political blame game in the state. At the same time, the Disaster Management Bureau reminds the public to remain cautious. Gate 19 of Hospet Dam was washed away due to strong floods on Saturday night.

The temporary installation of five baffle boards for No. 19 crest gate of Tungabhadra Dam has finally been completed. A team led by expert Kannaiah Naidu brought relief across Karnataka. The team worked tirelessly for three days to install the gate. Even farmers who depend on the Tungabhadra river for their livelihood expressed their gratitude.
Kannaiah Naidu told a press conference on Saturday morning that if they try to install the hilltop gate after stopping the flow of water, its capacity will be reduced. Since they installed parking cameras during floods, 30 billion cubic feet of water have been saved. If the inflow continues, the dam's capacity will soon reach 90 TMC feet.
The purpose of a water stop gate is to effectively manage water flow until a top gate is established as a permanent solution. Once the installation is complete, Kannaiah Naidu recommends capacity testing of the other top gates. Generally, overhead doors have a service life of up to 45 years. Naidu said there was no reason to worry over the next 30 to 35 years.
According to reports, all gates except Gate 19 have been closed and the dam is testing its structural capabilities by releasing water only through this gate. This results in a decrease in water flow, but a gradual increase in reservoir levels. As of now, 71.1 TMC feet of water has been stored, while the reservoir can store up to 105.7 TMC feet of water.
After completing the installation of parking logs, the people of Karnataka hailed Kannaiah Naidu as “Bhagiratha Kalyana Karnataka”. The Chief Minister of Karnataka also expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” on behalf of the farmers of the state and thanked dam construction and safety expert and retired engineer Kannaiah Naidu for all the engineers, officials and staff On-site guidance provided by staff. He also thanked all the engineers, officials, staff and workers who undertook this mammoth task.
