Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy on Sunday called population growth a major challenge facing the country and said Indians have not focused on population control since the Emergency.
Murthy made the remarks at the convocation ceremony of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Prayagra, where he was the chief guest.
“India faces major challenges in terms of population, land availability per capita and health facilities,” he said.
“Since the Emergency, we Indians have not paid enough attention to population control. This poses the risk of making our country unsustainable. In comparison, countries like the United States, Brazil and China have much higher per capita land supply A lot,” he said.
Murthy also emphasized that the responsibility of a true professional is to contribute to the progress of the country.
“This contribution depends on aspiration, dreaming big and working hard to turn those dreams into reality,” the Infosys co-founder said.
“One generation has to make many sacrifices to improve the lives of the next generation. My parents, siblings and teachers made huge sacrifices for my progress and my coming here as the chief guest proves that their sacrifices were not in vain,” he explain.
During the ceremony, a total of 1,670 degrees were awarded. The institute won 34 gold medals and university students won 13 gold medals.
