Even as the Union health ministry approved a 25% increase in security arrangements at central hospitals, junior doctors are still protesting across the country against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to first hear the Somo Motif in the Kolkata rape-murder case today. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud took note of the incident and included the matter at the top of the list of reasons for holding hearing at 10:30 am on Tuesday.
India's Central Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the case, has been given permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused, a citizen volunteer.
CBI officials on Monday also questioned Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for the fourth consecutive day in connection with the case.
In Kolkata, where protests escalated, senior doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami, who led the Calcutta Medical College, took to social media to post about the incident. Hundreds of healthcare professionals marched to the Kolkata Police Headquarters and later appeared before the police.
