The Democratic National Convention (DNC) issued guidance urging food suppliers to offer plant-based foods or “low-emission” meats.

The Democratic National Committee's sustainability guidelines for food vendors serving customers at the Chicago convention recommend that they should “offer low-emission menu options,” include plant-based options, and “prioritize” chicken when possible because of its Carbon is less intense. Environmentalists and agencies such as the United Nations have long insisted that reforming agricultural practices and reducing red meat consumption are key to reducing emissions and combating climate change. According to the New York Times, beef is considered the most carbon-intensive meat produced to date, followed by lamb and farmed crustaceans.

The guidance is non-binding, although the DNC also launched a survey for vendors, ancillary event hosts and other stakeholders to fill out information on steps they are taking to make their contributions to the convention more environmentally friendly.

“Offer low-emission menu options, including plant-based and locally sourced options. If meat is offered, prioritize low-emission meats such as chicken,” the guidance states. Additionally, the DNC’s recommendations for suppliers include “requiring ethically sourced/fair trade certified seafood, coffee, tea and chocolate” and “purchasing high-emission items such as coffee through local small business partners.”

Some of the food vendors listed on the Democratic National Committee's registry include restaurants that ostensibly serve meat, including “Bazaar Meat” and the “Chicago Chop House.” The Democratic National Committee's guidelines also urge vendors to use reusable or compostable utensils and encourage them to purchase goods from local suppliers, in part to reduce emissions.

Additionally, the Democratic National Committee recommends purchasing “renewable energy certificates” or credits to “measure and mitigate the impact of the energy used to heat, cool and power venues and hotels.”

The Democratic National Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
