KOLKATA: Police were deployed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata after the emergency room was vandalized by gangsters on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
On Wednesday, personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) visited and inspected the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, a day after the Supreme Court ordered the deployment of central paramilitary forces in state-run medical institutions.
A day after the Supreme Court ordered the deployment of CISF at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a team of central paramilitary forces on Wednesday visited the state-run medical institution and inspected the security arrangements.
A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team led by a senior officer reached the hospital in the morning. An official said security arrangements were discussed with local police and hospital authorities.

On August 9, the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered was found in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking national outrage. The next day, a citizen volunteer was arrested in connection with the case.
In the early hours of August 15, a mob entered the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and vandalized the emergency room, nursing station and pharmacy, while also damaging CCTV cameras.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered deployment of CISF at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to enable doctors to resume work.
“Following this brutal incident and subsequent demonstrations, the state government is expected to ensure deployment of state machinery to prevent law and order violations.
“This is all the more necessary as investigations into crimes committed on hospital premises are ongoing. We cannot understand why the state was unprepared to deal with incidents of vandalism on hospital premises,” the Supreme Court said.
