Social media platforms have been asked to inform the IT Ministry about the actions they have taken following the Supreme Court order
The IT Ministry on Wednesday asked social media platforms to immediately comply with the Supreme Court order and delete the names, photos and videos of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Seeking immediate removal of identifiable information of the deceased from all social media platforms, the IT Ministry warned that failure to comply with the Supreme Court order may lead to legal consequences and further regulatory action.
Social media platforms have been asked to inform the IT Ministry about the actions they have taken based on the Supreme Court order.
“The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asked social media platforms operating in India to comply with a recent Supreme Court order dated August 20, 2024 titled Kinnori Ghosh @ Anr. v. Union of India & Others – Response: Circulation of names and photos of deceased persons in RG Kar Medical College incident,” an official press release said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that the name, photos and videos of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be removed from all social media platforms.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said disclosing the identity of the sexual assault victim was in violation of its order passed in the Nipun Saxena case.
“The Supreme Court of India issued an injunction directing the immediate removal of all mention of the name of the deceased, as well as any photos and video clips depicting the deceased, from all social media platforms and electronic media,” a release from the IT Ministry said. The directive was prompted by concerns over the dissemination of sensitive material related to the incident in question.
The IT Ministry stressed the importance of complying with the Supreme Court order to protect the privacy and dignity of the individuals concerned and accordingly asked social media platforms to “take immediate action to ensure compliance with the order”.
“The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology urges all social media companies to ensure that such sensitive information is not disseminated further. Failure to comply with the Supreme Court order may result in legal consequences and further regulatory action,” it said.
All social media platforms have been asked to notify the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) of actions taken under the Supreme Court order.
