In a coordinated operation by Ranchi and Odisha police, five SIM boxes were seized from Maulana Azad Colony in Namkum, Ranchi. The devices were reportedly smuggled into India from Bangladesh and brought to India by Bangladeshi national Asdur Zaman.
The SIM card boxes were initially installed in Odisha and then shipped to Ranchi. They were secretly set up in Maulana Azad Colony, an area known for its narrow streets and high footfall due to its proximity to the local bus stand. This strategic location is frequented by thousands of commuters every day, making tracking calls through these SIM boxes particularly challenging for authorities.
Cyber expert Rahul Kumar provided insights into the case, explaining that SIM boxes are mass-produced in China but illegally transported to Bangladesh and Pakistan before being smuggled into India. This development poses significant economic and security risks. SIM boxes can hold multiple SIM cards simultaneously and are designed to change the nature of telecommunications. The link with Bangladesh further exacerbates the security threat and highlights the seriousness of the situation.
Odisha police are currently investigating the SIM box case's links to Bangladesh, including whether the devices were used to contact Bangladeshi infiltrators. Investigators are also looking into whether the SIM card boxes were used solely for call forwarding or whether there was a deeper conspiracy involved.
Earlier, in December 2018, SIM boxes were found at Kantatoli in Bazar police station area and Chandni Chowk in Ranchi's Namkum police station area. The facilities were found to be operating as call centers.
Giving an update on the case, Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said the investigation is currently focusing on the Ranchi connection. Legal action will be taken based on the findings. The international links of the SIM box operation are particularly alarming and the full scope of the case will become clearer as the investigation progresses.
