A 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a government hospital in Karnataka's Chikkaballapur district, amid ongoing outrage over the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, police informed on Thursday. The accused has been arrested.
The incident happened at 2am on Wednesday. The woman came to the hospital from a village on the outskirts of Chintamani for treatment and decided to spend the night there as it was getting late.
The 25-year-old defendant, whose name is Irfan, hails from Chintamani. He bets every day and comes to the hospital for treatment.
Police said Irrfan raped the woman after he found her alone. The woman is resting in the hospital. However, some people from the hospital rushed to the spot and rescued her after hearing her cries for help. They also caught the accused and handed him over to the police.
“The woman came to the hospital for treatment. She was in the hospital. During that time, someone raped her. Jikabalapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey confirmed the incident and the accused has been arrested and detained.
Jikkaballapur police chief said the crime took place on campus and not in the hospital. Currently, the woman is receiving treatment in the hospital.
Choksi said a case has been registered under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (rape).
The incident came as the rape and murder of a 31-year-old intern doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, India, sparked national outrage.
