At 9.30 am, a “motionless” and “half-naked” body was found by a first-year PGT doctor in the chest department, and the first general diary (GDE 542) was recorded at Tala police station at 10.10 am and 3.40 pm. The MSVP (Medical Superintendent and Vice-Chancellor) submitted a confidential letter in a sealed envelope to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tala PS for registration of an FIR regarding the 'discovery of body' along with 40 exhibits to the Forensic Team of Kolkata Police Several cases of rape and murder were recovered from the crime scene before the FIR was lodged at 11.45 pm.
Shocking details of the incident in which a young doctor was found raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital on August 9 have emerged as News18 accessed key investigative documents and records of the Kolkata Police water surface.
How did the investigation begin and progress?
According to the timeline recorded by the Kolkata Police, officers from the nearest Tara police station arrived at the crime scene in two batches, the first at 10.10 am and the second at 10.30 am. The scene of crime (SOC) was immediately sealed and secured to prevent contamination.
Senior officials, including an additional commissioner level and some joint commissioner level, along with detective and forensic teams of the detective department along with footprint and fingerprint experts, a photographer and a photographer arrived between 11 and 11.30 am on site. At around 10:52 a.m., the deputy director notified the victim’s family and asked to go to the hospital. The police chief arrived at the scene around 12:30 p.m.
According to investigative records, the on-call emergency medical officer (EMO) pronounced the victim dead at 12:44 p.m. A team from the National Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to inspect the incident. The judicial proceedings continued despite delays and protests by the victims' families demanding a judicial investigation and a videotaped autopsy. At around 1 p.m., experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FLS) arrived, and at 1:10 p.m., the family members arrived at the seminar room under the guidance of hospital leaders. The EMO prepared a medical certificate and death certificate at 1.47pm and handed over the victim's body to the police.
In the report sent to the magistrate (WB Form No. 5370), the police officer handling the case said: “After receiving the information, he rushed to the PO (place of incident) and on reaching there he found a dead body. The lady was in Half-naked and in a coma. He identified the woman as being pronounced dead. He noted in the report that certain injuries were found on the deceased's body, including injuries to her private parts, UD Case (u/s 194 BNSS // 174 CrPC) vide Tala PS UD Case No. 861 so the process interrogation and PM can start immediately.
“Secret” hints about the body
At around 3 p.m., the victim's family and colleagues verbally requested that an inquest and autopsy be conducted in the presence of a judicial magistrate and on video. An officer was sent to the Silda Court to arrange for a judicial magistrate. A request has been sent to ACJM Sealdah to commission a JM to conduct the investigation and remain present during the PM's inspection. The hospital sent a confidential letter to Tala PS seeking registration of an FIR, which was a general intimation and not a specific complaint.
The autopsy took place between 6.10 and 7.10pm and was fully recorded. Subsequently, amid the anger and protests of the doctors, the body was shifted to the mortuary and by 11.45 pm, a specific complaint from the family led to the registration of an FIR (under Tala PS Case No. 52/2024) detailing the allegations of rape and murder. During this time, the DD Forensic Team and the National Forensic Laboratory examined the crime scene. A police dog team arrived at the scene with sniffer dogs around 8pm.
Documents show that while the interrogation and autopsy were ongoing, investigators began scrutinizing all entrances and exits to the scene of crime (SOC) and reviewing CCTV footage. Eleven people, including four of the victims' doctor colleagues who were on duty that night, were interviewed to piece together details of the case.
40 exhibits seized from crime scene
From 8:30 to 10:45 p.m., forensic experts seized 40 exhibits from the SOC through video recordings in the presence of local observers. After post-mortem, the body was returned to the family, who later filed an FIR at around 11.45 pm detailing allegations of rape and murder against unidentified persons.
This resulted in the registration of an FIR number. 52 Tara Police Station.
