Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will chair a review meeting on Left Wing Extremism (LWE) and review development work in Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
The minister will begin a series of meetings on Saturday and will stay in Chhattisgarh till Sunday. According to Shah's itinerary, he will reach Raipur on Friday evening. The minister will inaugurate the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Raipur office on Sunday and hold a review meeting, followed by a meeting on expansion of cooperative societies in Chhattisgarh.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Indian government is assisting LWE-affected states by providing CRPF camps, training and funds for modernization of state police forces, equipment and weapons, sharing of intelligence, and building and strengthening police stations. In addition, the Indian government has also taken several specific initiatives in LWE-affected states, especially expanding road networks, improving telecom connectivity, skills and financial inclusion.
The ministry in a statement in Parliament said, “In the past 10 years since 2014-15, 6,908 crore has been released under the Special Infrastructure Scheme (SIS), Security Related Expenditure (SRE) and Special Central Assistance (SCA) schemes Rs. 1,000 crore has been provided to central agencies under the LWE Management Program Assistance to Central Agencies to purchase helicopters and address critical infrastructure for security camps in LWE affected areas. According to the ministry, over the past 10 years (since May 2014), the government has carried out major expansions of the road network. 14,395 kilometers of roads have been built, of which 11,474 kilometers were built in the past 10 years. To improve telecommunications connectivity, 5,139 mobile towers have been installed in LWE-affected areas. In terms of financial inclusion, since April 2015, 1,007 bank branches and 937 ATMs have been opened in the 30 areas most affected by LWE, and 5,731 new post offices have been opened in LWE-affected areas. On the development front, 46 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 49 Skill Development Centers (SDCs) have been commissioned in LWE-affected areas.
The Home Office said LWE violence was down 73% from high levels in 2010. .
