The Calcutta High Court has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government's formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged finances of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Breach, money flow and corruption Earlier this month a trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
The PIL, filed by HC advocate Madhurima Basu and moved by prominent advocate and BJP leader Susmita Saha Dutt, challenged the constitution of the SIT, which included police officers involved in the scam.
The petition further mentioned that there is a possibility of alteration and elimination of evidence if the state-constituted SIT investigates the matter. The PIL further asked a central investigation agency such as ED or CBI to investigate the alleged irregularities. It also urged the seizure of all bank accounts of the institute's former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Kolkata HC questions Bangladesh government
A day earlier, the High Court had challenged the West Bengal government over the delay in constitution of the inquiry team.
The Bangladesh government established the SIT on August 20, nearly a year after the allegations first surfaced.
Akhtar Ali, former vice-president of the National Medical College, asked the education ministry to investigate the former principal for alleged corruption. Ali claimed that he reported Ghosh's alleged financial irregularities to state authorities in 2023, but no substantive action was taken until recently.
During the hearing, Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj asked the state government why it took a year to constitute the SIT after the allegations were first reported.
Charges against Ghosh
Ghosh was removed as principal after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital on August 9. Necessary tendering and operation of unauthorized information kiosks on hospital premises.
Meanwhile, the CBI obtained court approval to conduct polygraph tests on Ghosh and four other doctors who were on duty on the day of the intern rape-murder case.
