Seven members of two families were killed when houses collapsed in south Tripura's Santil Bazar area after massive landslides triggered by incessant rains late on Wednesday night, disaster management officials said.

Expressing shock over the incident, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the state government would provide financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to each affected family.
Thirteen deaths, including a 12-year-old girl and a woman, have been reported since Monday in South Tripura, Gomati and Howai districts, while two others are reported missing.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 233 mm rainfall in Agartala from 8.30 am on Wednesday to 8.30 am on Thursday.
According to the IMD, all eight districts of Tripura on Thursday received one of the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Bho under Santil Bazar division of South Tripura receiving one of the highest rainfalls in the past 24 hours. The rainfall in the Jiafa area reached 493.6 mm.
IMD officials said that although the “heavy” to “very heavy” rainfall warning continues and the “red alert” has been sounded in all eight districts, the intensity of rainfall is likely to weaken from Thursday evening.
