Sanjay Roy, accused of raping and murdering a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, lacks legal representation, Supreme Court lawyer Ajay Prakash Singh offers Consider taking over the case. In an exclusive interview with News18 Hindi, Singh said he may be ready to represent Roy if approached, although he noted that there would be certain conditions.
Previously, Singh served as the defense lawyer for the accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case and the 2020 Hathras gang rape case. However, he also faced public criticism for this. Singh was also the lawyer for “Bhole Baba” in the recent Hathras stampede case.
In recent interviews, Singh did not address Sanjay Roy's case directly, but he stressed that every defendant has the right to legal representation. He said the defendant needed a defense lawyer to present his case in court. He added: “This will set a dangerous precedent if defendants are not given a fair opportunity to defend themselves.”
Singer acknowledged the strong public sentiment toward Roy, calling him a disgusting figure who committed heinous acts. “He is considered a danger to society and there is little sympathy for him. Whether he is in prison or not, his potential threat to society remains a concern. It is widely believed that he may continue to pose a danger even if he is released.
Asked if he would represent Roy, Singh said not at the moment as the first priority was to hear from those involved. “If the defendant's family contacts me, then I will consider it further,” he added. Singh stressed that any decision to take up the case would depend on whether Roy's family contacts him directly.
Singh, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, has risen to prominence in recent years for his involvement in a number of high-profile cases. His legal arguments sparked debate from lower courts in Delhi to the Supreme Court. Despite the controversy, Singer is known for his willingness to represent those in need.
