Dr. Chandramouli Jha (right), a former student of RG Kar, had protested against Dr. Sandip Ghosh in 2021.
News18 spoke to ex-students and students of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital: “There is a scam going on… There is a medical mafia here,” say former students amid controversy over the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor. Hotel guests say they still live in fear after the August 14 vandalism
From paying bribes to become in-house employees of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to being deregistered for opposing any irregularities, former students have now started exposing corruption and malfeasance under Dr Sandip Ghosh. Scanners were used after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on September 9.
“RG Kar is running a scam…it's the medical mafia here,” the former student told News18.

Dr. Chandramouli Jha, a former student of RG Kar and now trying to apply for PG in Kolkata, had lodged a protest against Dr. Ghosh in 2021. We also went on hunger strike. But our protests were nipped in the bud. Dr. Ghosh canceled my registration. I had to go to court to get it registered. RG Kar has a threat group. If they want to become in-house staff, they have to pay fees to the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) or the student wing of the Trinamool Congress. MLA Sudipto Roy is also a key figure,” Jha said.
Dr. Mainak from the same batch also faced a similar problem. He also claimed that his registration was stopped after he protested.
Sources within the hospital said Ghosh used to run his own business and had a group of students working for him. Some doctors claimed: “Even to talk to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, we had to pass through the TMC student area.” Dr. Ghosh faced a range of accusations, from biological waste trafficking to cadaver selling.
The financial irregularities at the hospital will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday morning, according to the Calcutta High Court order. Doctors believe financial irregularities are key and all those involved should be brought to the attention of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Still living in fear after August 14 violence: Hostels
Protests over the rape-murder case turned violent on August 14, with mobs damaging hospital grounds. After the incident, several guests of the RG Kar Hostel left on the morning of August 15. A hotel owner said she too was back, and although she was back now, she was still scared.
“At least 80% of the people left the hospital dormitory. Some started to return. That night we held a rally inside the hospital. We were attacked. They used foul language and threatened us while we were hiding in the dormitory. That night We lived in fear. The next day, I returned home to the district. Now I'm back, but there's still fear,” she said.

Another female doctor told News18: “We had to hide under benches and in toilets that night. Unlike many of us, we didn't go back. It was such a horrific night. We want our campaign for justice to continue and this That's why we stayed put, but many didn't come back. We lived in fear.
At the Supreme Court hearing, a doctor also said 70 health workers felt threatened. Although the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been deployed, they are still unsure about its security.
