Developed by Tamil Nadu-based startup Space Zone India in partnership with Martin Group, the rocket carries three Cube satellites and 50 PICO satellites, which are launched into suborbital orbits using mobile launchers.

India on Saturday added another feature to its space technology portfolio by launching its first reusable hybrid rocket 'RHUMI-1' from Thiruvidandhai in Chennai.

Developed by Space Zone India, a startup based in Tamil Nadu, in partnership with the Martin Group, the rocket carries three Cube satellites and 50 PICO satellites and launches them into a suborbital orbit using a mobile launcher.

    What's the purpose?

These satellites will collect data and information for research purposes on global warming and climate change. RHUMI-1 is equipped with a universal fuel-based hybrid engine and an electrically triggered parachute deployer. The spacecraft is 100% pyrotechnic-free and 0% TNT.

The RHUMI-1 rocket combines the advantages of liquid and solid fuel propellant systems to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.

    What are the main features?

RHUMI 1 is designed with flexibility and reusability in mind, using a number of cutting-edge technologies. One of its key features is the adjustable launch angle, which can be modified between 0 and 120 degrees, allowing for precise control of its trajectory.

The rocket also has a carbon dioxide-triggered parachute system, an environmentally friendly and cost-effective mechanism that ensures safe recovery of rocket components after launch. In addition to space exploration goals, RHUMI 1's applications extend to agriculture, environmental monitoring and disaster management.

    Who led the mission?

The RHUMI mission is led by Space Zone founder Anand Megalingam and guided by Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, former director of ISRO Satellite Center (ISAC).

Space Zone India is a Chennai-based aerospace technology company that aims to provide low-cost, long-term solutions to the aerospace industry.

Space Zone of India (SZI) provides practical training experience in aerodynamic principles, satellite technology, drone technology and rocket technology. It also raises awareness of career options in the industry. SZI partners with private institutions, colleges of engineering, colleges of arts and sciences, and private and public schools.

In 2023, through the “PhD” mission APJ Abdul Kalam Student Satellite Launch – In 2023, more than 2,500 students from governments, tribals and public schools across the country participated in the design and construction of the student satellite launch vehicle. The vehicle can carry a payload of 150 Pico satellite research experiment cubes.
