The man attacked police officers as they were being taken to the scene for investigation, grabbed a pistol from an officer and fired. The police fired back, injuring one of the defendant's legs.
An accused, who was arrested along with another person for allegedly trying to molest two girls, was shot and injured while trying to escape from police custody in Assam's Sonitpur district on Saturday, police said.
The duo allegedly tried to molest two girls who were walking here on Friday night and when they raised the alarm, locals rushed to the spot.
The accused tried to flee the spot but people chased them and arrested them, Sonitpur Deputy Superintendent of Police Madhurima Das told reporters here.
She said they were later handed over to police from Mahabhairab police station.

The police returned fire, injuring one of the defendant's legs.

She added that the two girls have lodged an FIR and the police have registered a case with the relevant departments of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
A group of local residents surrounded the police station to protest the incident.
Meanwhile, in Tinsukia, a man was arrested for allegedly trying to molest a teenage girl in Sripuria area of the town.
Locals reported the matter to the police and a search was launched to arrest him.
He was arrested along with another accomplice on Friday.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and BNS.
