During the search operation, officials of the CBI's anti-corruption wing also reached the residence of Dr Debashish Som, demonstrator of forensic medicine and toxicology at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Three days ago, Akhtar Ali, former vice-president of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, filed a complaint alleging corruption and irregularities at the institution and specifically accusing Debashish Som doctor.

The CBI on Saturday registered a first information report (FIR) against Dr Sandip Ghosh on an order of the Calcutta High Court. The investigation began after a high court judge directed India's Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate alleged corruption at the medical college.

Earlier, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Calcutta High Court visited the CBI office at the Nizam Palace and handed over key documents related to the case. Acting swiftly on this information, the CBI registered an FIR and filed a copy with the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) on Saturday.

The Calcutta High Court has given three weeks to the CBI to provide a progress report on the investigation, which will be submitted on September 17.

The medical college came under intense media scrutiny after traffic police volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested on August 9 after a postgraduate trainee doctor was accused of rape and murder in a seminar room.

Following directions from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has registered a case in connection with the killing and alleged financial irregularities.

Ban near RG Kar Hospital extended until August 31

Kolkata Police has extended the ban near the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for one more week till August 31.

The orders, first implemented on August 18, limit meetings and gatherings of more than five people in designated areas.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal issued a statement on Saturday confirming the extension of Section 163 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to include around hospitals. The ban covers the area from Belgachia Road-J K Mitra crossing point to parts of Shyambazar five-point crossing zone in north Kolkata.

The purpose of the extension is to prevent riots and maintain peace and order in the area. The decision comes in the wake of ongoing unrest over the recent rape and murder of a female doctor at the hospital, which has caused a huge uproar.
