'Crimes against women are inexcusable': PM Modi says women's safety is most important amid rape-murder protests

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the safety of women in India was of paramount importance and he had repeatedly told state governments that “crimes against women are unforgivable crimes”.

Addressing the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Prime Minister Modi said, “Apart from empowering mothers, sisters and daughters, their safety is also the top priority of the country. Prime Minister Modi's remarks came as thousands of women across the country took to the streets to demand justice in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata.
