Delhi Police has registered a case after pornographic videos were displayed on digital advertising boards in the Connaught Place area, officials said on Saturday.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which belongs to the area, issued a statement saying that this may be a case of using advanced technology to “hack” the screen.
Officials said the matter came to light when passers-by spotted the video being played on an LED advertising screen in Area H of Connaught Place on Thursday evening.
The few-second-long video clip was later deleted from the blackboard with the help of NDMC officials, a police officer said.
NDMC said it operates two types of panels in its jurisdiction – one for advertisements and the other for interactive touch screens.
“Both the panels comply with international standards and are controlled by servers that are fully firewall and anti-virus protected. We are also providing free hotspots in the NDMC area for public use.
The civic body said this was “one of a kind incident”, adding that it was working to find out how the firewall was breached.
The NDMC said advertising hoardings have been set up at 50 locations under its jurisdiction.
It noted that only one panel at one location was vandalized and there were no issues elsewhere and that someone might have hacked into the specific LED panel “using some advanced technology” and the civic body was “trying to find out” this.
The police officer said that relevant departments of the National Security Bureau have opened a case to investigate the case and are conducting investigations to arrest the person behind the incident.
Connaught Place is an iconic historic business district in the heart of the nation's capital and one of the city's busiest markets.
