Petlu is a musical instrument that is made a day before Janmashtami celebrations.
Krishna Janmashtami is greatly revered throughout the country. This moment marks the birth of Lord Krishna. One region in Karnataka celebrates this period with unique customs, including a unique musical instrument called petlu. According to Local18, this practice takes place in the Malnad district of Karnataka. As per custom, petlu is made a day before Janmashtami. Local18 said it was a traditional firecracker that could be used as a pistol. It is made of bamboo sticks. According to the instructions given, to make the instrument, the bamboo is cut and shaped into a flute. Then shape the other bamboo stick into a similar shape to the first one, with the same size handle. After that, it is filled with jummana kayi, which is a type of chili pepper seeds. It makes a louder sound than commonly used fireworks.
One of the instrument's creators is 50-year-old Tukaram Hulaswar, a resident of Gokarna in the northern state of Kannada. According to Local18, he has been a toymaker for the past 14 years. A petlu is sold for Rs 150, while jummana kayis are sold for Rs 20. The toymaker added that they sold it into the evening. Petlu Festival is held in Gokarna on the second day of Jamashtami.
Toymaker demonstrates how petlu works. He grasped its handle and used the attached stick to stuff it into the tube, making a sound like a firecracker.
