The recently opened nursery at Mangaluru District Jail, which showcases ornamental plants grown by 16 inmates, is currently making headlines. According to Local 18 Kannada, the district jail conducts this activity for the rehabilitation of inmates. After these criminals are released from prison, they must make a living. Therefore, they were taught to grow plants. District jail superintendent BT Oblesappa is concerned about inmates being taught to plant saplings from non-agricultural backgrounds. He still managed to teach the prisoners and appreciated their efforts. The warden said arrangements should be made to sell the saplings to bring money into government coffers.
Early Childhood Training
Motivated by this achievement, District Warden BT Oblesappa provided childcare training by experts to 30 other inmates from agricultural backgrounds. Trained prisoners grew a variety of ornamental crotons, hibiscus, jasmine and royal farm plants in a nursery style. The plants are already selling well in spaces outside prisons. Convey the message to people about the sale of saplings by hanging banners.
Currently, there is a huge demand for these saplings and the locals of Mangaluru seem to be responding well to meeting this demand. All in all, prison work not only changes the minds of inmates, but also lays the foundation for them to live a self-reliant life. This is a commendable initiative.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Mugilan has officially opened the nursery, Udayavani publication reported. According to him, the journey to open a nursery began when he visited the prison for an event a few months ago. He was struck by the lush greenery within the prison walls. He said the fields of plants cultivated by the prisoners caught his attention. The district council then decided to set up a platform to sell the plants, thus helping prisoners serve society in a meaningful way.
The plant sales center is located at the prison gate. This is the result of the joint efforts of the municipal government, forestry bureau and other departments.
