Police maintain vigilance at key locations to ease traffic
The Mumbai traffic police collected over Rs 1 crore in fines through electronic ticket checking on Janmashtami for violating traffic rules, a police officer said on Tuesday.
Police maintained vigils at key locations as part of efforts to ease traffic. The fines include riding a bicycle without a helmet, traveling with a three-seater, and driving in a restricted area.
2,791 cyclists, including riders and pillion riders, were fined Rs 21 lakh for riding without helmets. 993 people were fined Rs 8,44,500 for crossing traffic signs while riding bicycles or driving vehicles. The official said 290 people were fined Rs 243,000 for riding three-seater motorcycles.
Other categories of traffic rule violations include abandoning or parking a vehicle in a public place and overloading passengers. Car drivers were fined for refusing to carry passengers.

“A total of 13,146 tickets were issued to motorists with fines amounting to Rs 1,05,68,250,” the official added.
