The bodies of two girls were found on a tree outside a village in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad on Tuesday. Police have launched an investigation into what is initially believed to be a double suicide.
According to family members, the two girls, aged 15 and 18, went to attend Janmashtami on Monday night but did not return. Later, their bodies were found hanging in a mango orchard on Tuesday morning.
A mobile phone was found near the tree and a SIM card was found on the clothes of one of the girls. The recovered items have been sent for further investigation to obtain additional details.
Superintendent of Police (Fathegarh) Alok Priyadarshi said the body was found outside a village in Kayamganj police station area on Tuesday morning and the matter is being investigated.
“After receiving the call, the local police immediately rushed to the scene to check. It is said that the two girls were 15 and 18 years old respectively. It is said that they were close friends and lived in the same neighborhood. Two quilts were hung on the bodies. ‘Dupatta’ tied together,” SP added.
The necks of the two girls are tied at both ends of the 'Dupatta' stretched across the tree.
He said that on the surface, it appeared to be a case of suicide, but the details could only be determined after the autopsy report came out.
He said the girl's family had been contacted and a written complaint received from them.
Meanwhile, the father of one of the girls said they attended a function at a nearby temple on the occasion of Janmashtami. “They went in the evening and came back around 9pm because it started to rain. Later, in the evening, they went again. The show ended around 1am. When they didn't come back, we started looking for them. New Delhi Television.
“One of the children said they were sleeping at their aunt's house. We went there but could not find them. Many of our relatives live there, so we thought they must be sleeping there and will be back in the morning,” he said, adding “However, one of their acquaintances told us that someone was hung from a tree in the orchard. When we reached there at 6 a.m., we found the girls hanging. We thought someone had killed them and hung their bodies .
In a horrific incident in Uttar Pradesh in early 2014, two minor girls, cousins belonging to the Dalit community, were abducted, gang-raped and hanged from a tree in Katra Sadatganj village in Uttar Pradesh's Badong district.
Akhilesh Yadav demands action
After the incident, Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav asked the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government to quickly investigate the case, saying such incidents created a terrible atmosphere in society.
He wrote in X magazine: “In a very sensitive matter, the bodies of two girls were found hanging from a tree while they were out attending the Janmashtami festival in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. India The PPP government should immediately conduct an impartial investigation into the matter and submit a report on this suspicious murder.

“Such incidents have created a terrible atmosphere in society and caused deep psychological trauma to women in society. It is now inevitable to regard 'women's safety' as a serious issue that transcends politics,” he added.
